Millers Falls Langdon Mitre Box No.15-1/2 (12 L x 2-1/2 D) Disston made for MF 16" Mitre Saw Plate .032 X 16 X 2.5" 13 points per inch Filed Cross Cut: 20º rake 35º fleam Circa 1900-1920 This little beauty will be hard to part with as I've only had my hands on one other and they don't come along in this shape often. I'm not a millers fall expert but I'm fairly sure this is the 15-1/2 with 16" saw. I know some of the model numbers were tied back to the box so I've listed the box size above. I added the cherry base but other then that it's as found including the wood on the top of the box. Please note all screws and stops complete. The saw is a standard Disston apple handle mitre box saw sharpened for fine cuts on Med to hard woods. Please have a look at the pictures of the all metat box. There is no cracks or missing bits. The bed of the box is covered with a thin piece of of wood painted with sand to provide grip. I'm not sure if this is original to the box it's easily removable if need be. See below about saw All Saw sold come with a FREE second sharpening. If you already own one don’t worry. The change is retroactive and all you’re responsible for is shipping. This is in addition to the FREE insurance I already offer. ABOUT THE SAW PLATE: The 16" mitre box saw is straight and retains somel factory shine. There is some slight staining from age, but the saw has a really nice patina see pictures. The Pitch is 13 points per inch plate and filed cross cut 20º rake and 35º fleam and was tested on maple and oak and produced perfect cuts. The back was reblued as it would have been done from the factory HANDLE: The apple handle is in very good shape with no repairs and most of the original sticker still intact. Note some tool-box nicks and character dings but over all it's in very good shape. "A New Wrinkle in Saw" C.E. Jennings No. 131 6 piece interchangeable plates Garland adjustable locking handle Circa 1911 This auction features a six blade saw kit from sold by C.E.Jennings & Co. New York under the Arrow head brand BLADES INCLUDE ARE: 18 inch rip 7ppi 18 inch crosscut saw 10ppi 15-1/2 inch metal saw 14 ppi 15-1/2 inch metal saw 14 ppi 13 inch keyhole saw 10 ppi 15-1/2 inch Compass saw 8ppi All blades are marked "C.E. Jennings New York and sharp, usable condition. The C.e Jennings brand changed locations and from the ad shown below it's most likely this kit was made when they occupied the 42 Murray Street address. I have not sharpened or restored these blades or handles. They are quite nice with factory shine and in as found condition. I did a good deal of research and couldn't find the connection between Garland adjustable handle and a patented saw handles. James Garland did patent a saw set for Disston and could have use part of that. I did also find patent 938,680 for an "Adjustable and Detachable Handle for Saws" by Robert Martin matched a little closer and was used by both Disston and Richardson. Also note the two 18 inch blades are taper ground. The oilskin case is in fair condition with tears and general deterioration, see pictures. The kit would have been sold with the standard 5 saw blades and one optional. In this kit the owner bought and an extra metal saw and that one saw looks to have been about the only one used. Email with any questions and as always I'll do my best to answer.

SHARPEND 26" E.C. ATKINS No. 65 Ship point THIN PLATE 5.5 ppi Rip 1940-50 - $85.00

E.C. Atkins "Good Teeth Good Temper" No. 65 Silver Steel / Ship (point) Carpenters Finest Crucible Steel, Patented temper process Apple handle 26" 5-1/2 points per inch Filed Rip: 8º rake 0º fleam taper ground measured at the toe .030-.022 The E.C. Atkins story reads much like the classic American story. Born in Bristol Connecticut; apprenticed with his uncle, and learning the saw making trade. Afterwards relocating to Ohio for one year and Indianapolis thereafter. The story goes he started with a five hundred dollar bankroll, and in his lifetime built the business into a company easily the size of Disson Keystone Saw works. Atkins started making handsaws around 1857 mainly offering saws timber removal until 1896 when he added a line of handsaws. Atkins a competitor of Disston, built a reputation around the metal they used and there patented tempering process. As someone who’s sharpened a few saws there plates are hardened several points harder then most and remind me of the feel of sharpening a Disston 12 or Victory. This example is a late model with some light staining on the plate and has very good etch. Then model is a No. 65 from there higher end line and used what Atkins called “Silver Steel" and one of the four models etched ship point the other three being 53, 54, and 72. The these saws all come down to point and tend to have more flexible (read thinner .030-.022) plates that allowing for slight alterations in the cut line. I find they work great for Med to soft woods but they were designed for all type including hard. Note even on this later model saw it is still taper ground. I also offer FREE second sharping on all saws I recondition. If you already own one don’t worry. The change is retroactive and all you’re responsible for is shipping. This is in addition to the FREE insurance I already offer. thanks so much and please email with any questions. Joe

GOLD MEDAL SAW MFG CO. NEW YORK DISSTON MADE CUSTOM ETCH SERIES No. 300 / Paten Ground / Thin back Spring Steel Apple handle 26" 5 points per inch Filed Rip: 8º rake 0º fleam taper ground measured at the toe .042-.030 If you're likes are skewed to the small runs this is a great find. Disston over the years offered a number of custom etch saws for small manufactures. These would have warranted superior medallion and custom etches. Over the life of Disston's product line the model numbers associated with the "custom etches seriers" They range from triple to singe digit numbers and 'm sure Disston would etch whatever the buy wanted. What doesn't seem to change is the over all floral pattern in the etch. The one here is found on most of the custom etches saws in the 1914 reprint. I did also find a reference to this maker outside the scope of Disston in Erv's book "hand saw makers of North America but no maker or origin is given. I'd be the first person to praise Erv's book but as time goes one so much new information has come to light that it's not quite the end all, be all reference it once was. Regardless of my ramblings please have a look at the pictures and see the similarities between this and other Disstons. I Now offer FREE second sharpening on all saws I recondition. If you already own one don’t worry. The change is retroactive and all you’re responsible for is shipping. This is in addition to the FREE insurance I already offer. This saw is being offered at BUY IT NOW but I'm always happy to take offers and every tool hunter deserve the right! ABOUT THE SAW PLATE: The straight plate is from the higher end "spring steel" line and has a great sound when thumped. See pictures and you'll find some stains on the etch side but over all the plate retains high shine and the full plate tells you it's seen very little use. The stains are not etched deep and see angled shots. Becasue the saw was in such good condition I didn't feel the need to heavily sand it. The etch is 100% and looks only a few years old rather then the 100+. The saw was filed Rip cut 5º rake and 0º of fleam. Slightly more aggressive the factory but works great for rip cuts on modern dry hard woods that most of use these days. HANDLE: The apple handle is machine wheat carved and near perfect with full horns, see pictures. You will find very few toolbox dings, scratches, but over all the saw is as new condition. The nuts were cleaned not polished. Please email with any questions. thanks Joe

Simonds "the saw maker" No. 5 Straight back Full Plate / with nib "Special Crucible Steel, Patented temper process" Taper Ground plate / apple handle 24 inch 8 points per inch Filed Cross Cut: 15º rake 25º fleam taper at the toe .040-.023 Circa 1905-15 Simonds pronounced SI-monds was about the only competition Disston had and the similarities between the No.5 and Disston No 7 & 12 are easily recognized. For many, Simonds with it's patented processes and high quality materials were favored over all others and remarkable beat Disston in sales in the early 1900's. The 10 1/2 was a top level saw (at the time of production) and used a patented temper steel that was highly polished. Simonds is one of those makers like Atkins that truly doesn't get the credit it deserves. The cut quality of this saw is better then the pictures may due it justice. If your looking for a great shop saw for dimensionalizing lumber this is a great one for it. All Saw sold come with a FREE second sharpening. If you already own one don’t worry. The change is retroactive and all you’re responsible for is shipping. This is in addition to the FREE insurance I already offer. ABOUT THE SAW PLATE: The full and straight plate retains most of the factory shine and 60% of better of the etch. There is some staining and few pits from age, but the saw has a really nice patina see pictures. The 24 inch 8 points per inch plate was filed cross cut 15º rake and 25º fleam and was tested on both maple and poplar and produced perfect cuts. The 8 ppi size is perfect for dimensionalizing lumber and quickly cuts with minimal tearout when cutting. HANDLE: The apple handle had it's top horn repaired at some point. The repair is not recent and I'll happily stand behind it. Note: owners mark stampled R.O.W. in the handle. Looking at the pictures you will find some tool-box nicks and character dings but over-all it's in good shape. The only finish was coat of wax. Please email with any questions. thanks Joe

Henry Disston & Sons AMERICAN BOY MODEL Wheat Carved Apple Handle 20 inch 9 Points Per inch Factory tapered .022-.035 (measured at toe) Filed cross cut 15º Rake 25º Fleam Circa 1910-1920 The American Boy saw was made in one size: 20 inch plate, 9 point per inch but was available in both straight or skew-back shape. I'm fairly sure it was made with new sawyer's in mind and sold through the Disston line rather then the Keystone Saw works. I say this because the hardware is the standard brass marked glover style medallion. Either way its a great size Jr members or anyone with smaller hands. I wear Med. size mens gloves and find the handles fits me fine. ABOUT THE SAW: Plate: The 9 points per inch plate is straight, and retains much of it's factory shine. The etch is clean and 85% or better readable. You will find some staining and a few scratches but over all the plate has a nice patina, see pictures. The saw was hand filed cross cut 15º of rake and 25º fleam and tested on both oat and maple. Handle: The Apple wood handle needed the top horn repaired but otherwise in good shape. The repair was done with seasoned wood. You will find some light staining, tool box dings and a few chips see pictures. The handle was lightly refinished and waxed. The nuts were cleaned but not buffed. Please email with any questions. VULCAN SAWWORKS BROOKLYN NY Harvey W. Peace "Manufacture of First Quality Saws & Kindred goods" P26 Thin Plate / Taper Ground .025-.032 Cherry handle 24 inch 5-1/2 Pitch: Crowned cutting edge Filed Rip Cut: 4º rake Circa 1890-1910 The P-26 was one of two Peace-branded saws that continued to be produced after Disston acquired the Peace brand. The P-26 was included in the Disston catalog till about 1919. This saw retained the Peace logo, as well as the patent, nickel plated, reinforcing strip. Due to the long run it can be a little tricky knowing the date and maker but I’m fairly sure this was either from the Peace or National Saw Company, Pre Disston take over. I say this because the let in handles on the Disston P26’s I’ve seen are less details in the way the plate was cut out. They also don’t use as thin a plate as Peace made saws and lastly although Disston did use the Peace logo screw for a time they eventually switched over to there own. Any saws coming made during the National Saw Company years would most likely have used left over parts and therefore still from Peace. Without the etch it’s really hard to tell but on the upside regardless of the factory and maker it’s a great looking saws that cuts like a dream. Please note the top horn was repaired. All Saw sold come with a FREE second sharping. If you already own one don’t worry. The change is retroactive and all you’re responsible for is shipping. This is in addition to the FREE insurance I already offer. ABOUT THE SAW PLATE: The straight Thin, tapered plate retains somel factory shine but the etch is gone. You will also find some light pitting on the front side of the plate and on the tip. Neither of the areas effect the cutting edge. In addition there is some staining from age, but over all the saw has a really nice patina see pictures. The Pitch is 5 -1/2 points per inch plate and filed rip cut 4º rake and 0º fleam and was tested on maple and cherry and produced perfect cuts. The 24" size along with the thin tappered plate makes short of tricky rips. The thinner plate takes a little more dexterity to not overpower the cut but I found once you adjust you're cadence its all down hill HANDLE: The cherry or apple handle is in very good shape for it's years but the top horn was repaired. It was done with seasoned hard wood and I matched back to the handle. Please look at the pictures and note the tool-box nicks and character from the years of use. The only finish added was a coat of wax. P26 used a patented reinforcing strip and this one retains the pat date and near perfect condition. thanks so much and please let me know if you have any questions.

VULCAN SAWWORKS BROOKLYN NY Harvey W. Peace "Manufacture of First Quality Saws & Kindred goods" No. 45 Taper Ground plate / apple handle 24 inch 12 points per inch Filed Cross Cut: 15º rake 25º fleam Circa 1880-1890 This 24" 12 points per in No. 45 is a solid really early example of a popular model that’s features included: spring tapered steel, polished edges, four brass screws, and apple handle. Manufactured by Harvey W. Peace / Vulcan Sawworks of Brooklyn, N.Y. The No. 45 was a mid-priced saw in Harvey Peace’s lineup often resold thru a dealer network. This one however being an early model was most often sold direct. Peace for many, (including myself) seem to have that little extra something that the larger, high volume makers are missing. Peace due there higher quality held onto a smaller piece of the market longer then most. This example has seen use but remains in quite good shape, freshly sharpened and ready for use. I’m selling this BUY IT NOW and feel free to make an offer or ask any questions ABOUT THE SAW PLATE: The 24" plate is in good condition but does have the slighted bow. It's not sharp and doesn't warrent bending as the plates settled this way and I had no issues cutting with it. I mostly point it out as it's not laser straight. The plate is bright and retains shine. The etch is visible and 50% or better readable. There is some staining from age, but the saw has a really nice patina see pictures. The Pitch is 12 points per inch and filed cross cut 15º rake and 25º fleam. It was tested on maple and oak and produced perfect cuts. The 24" 12 ppi size is perfect for space minded shops and tricky grains and knotted wood. HANDLE: The apple handle is in very good shape for it's years and I don't think the handle was removed from the plate. Note the fine detail of the early style label screw and crisp fit. The top horn needed repair and was done with seasoned apple and finished to match. Please view the pictures and note tool-box nicks, character dings, and owners mark (only the front). The only finish added other then to the repaired horn was a coat of wax. thanks so much please email me for more picture or information. I've been having some issues with the paypal shipping so if no shipping is added in you can email me or I will just send you pricing after the saw is sold. Most run between 8.00-18.00. thanks Joe

Shapleigh Hardware Company Saint Louis, MO Diamond Edge Mechanic Saw Plate: .034 X 18 X 4" (at heal) HAND SHARPENED: CROSS CUT 15º Rake 25º Fleam Circa 1910-20 Shapleigh Hardware Company has a long and interesting history that’s well documented and easily found with a search on the internet. In short Augustus Frederick Shapleigh, was born in Portsmouth, N. H., Jan. 9, 1810, son of a ship-owner, who was lost at 1834. The family stayed in the shipping industry and eventually one of the children broke from the mold and worked for a hardware receiving $50 a year, boarding at home. Afterwards not really liking it returned to the sea but later re-engaged the hardware business; accepted a position with Rogers Bros. & Co., hardware merchants of Philadelphia. He eventually opens a branch in St. Louis, and the rest is history as they say. The company changes names and hands over the next few decades. In1888 the dust settles with A. F. Shapleigh Hardware Company, with Mr. Shapleigh as the president, and his sons, Frank Shapleigh, vice-president. Richard W. Shapleigh, second vice president, and Alfred Lee Shapleigh secretary and treasurer. The company had ties to both Simonds and eventually Keen cutter buying out the inventory. This is the second of 2 saws from a lot of carpentry saws I bought in the Lehigh Valley. Both were of similar design and filed for cross cut on cabinetry and carpentry work often called a “Mechanic Saw'. The adjustable handle along with the backless blade allows it to get into places that neither a backsaw or handsaw can fit. Note the pictures of the handle, the design uses two screws to lock the handles into 3 or more positions. The upper most allows it to be used similar to a stair saw for things like dado in a pinch. This saw is being sold as "buy it now" please feel free to make an offer and I'll do my best to meet it. I think compared to other saw mechanic, wrights, smiths selling vintage sharpened tools the value and performance I offer is second to none. HANDLE & PLATE The blade remains, for the most part, "shiny bright" with a a few light surface stain and no notable rust or pitting. There are a few light scratches but over all it’s in very nice condition and well cared for. The 10 points per inch plate was hand filed: 15º of rake 20º of fleam. The double etch is very clean and reads 90% or better. The secondary etch reads: This saw is made of spring Saw Steel of the Finest Quality. It is fully Warranted and represents the Acme of Perfection in making The Cherry or Mahogany handle has a crisp, nearly "like new" appearance with just a few tool-box nicks and surface scratches. The only refinishing, was a coat of wax. ABOUT ME AND THE PROCESS There are many of us offering recondition, collectable, and user-grade saws on eBay and through the web. I also sell direct and in person. I feel that’s worth noting as I’m not just a nameless, faceless eBay person. I attend many of the auctions and club meetings throughout the US. You’re welcome to check my background, follow my blog, or just email me. The goal in every restoration I do is to bring back the beauty in direct proportion to its overall condition. It’s a matter of aesthetics to me; polished saw screws on a handle that’s been sanded down to remove every imperfection is like lipstick on a pig. Also note that I offer a wider variety of makes, models, and years than most. I use high quality products, like water based dies over stain, dewaxed shellac flakes over rattle-can, and quality waxes. My process is ever changing as I try and learn new things. My sharpening process is time consuming and done 100% by hand unless noted. Exceptions are retoothing of new plates on backsaws. Regardless of the machine, this process is also very time consuming as well. I also cut and tooth my own plate for backsaws, something most can’t and don’t bother to offer. Each saw is jointed, shaped, set, sharpened, stoned, and then tested on both medium and hard woods. Adjustments are then made as needed. I do my best to check every aspect of the saw before sale. In the event I miss something, rest assured I will stand behind it. My name is Joe Federici and I hope you’ll agree I offer the highest quality, expertly sharpened restorations available. If you’re not happy, please contact me for a refund. Please email with any questions or more pictures. I've been having some troubles with the shipping calculations thru paypay so if no shipping shows up at checkout I will email you afterwards. thanks Joe

Henry Disston & Sons Classic D8 Cross Cut Handsaw "Let-In" "Cover-Top" American Beech handle 26 inch 9 Points Per inch (PERFECT ALL AROUND SAW) Original Skew-back design Filed Cross-Cut 15º Rake 25º Fleam The D8 is the original skew-back design patented by Henry Disston in 1874. It’s features: refined crucible steel, warranted craftsmanship, "let in" handle, and polished screws. This along with the Disston name made it one of the most popular saw in the world. Another reasons behind its popularity is the shape of the blade and the position of the handle. The let-in design place the hand closer to the work giving the user better command of the saw and allowing a full stroke produces more power. For those of you south pawed like myself the design and handle work ambidextrous. ABOUT THE SAW: PLATE: The plate is straight and retains some shine and patina that comes with age. The plate has some stains and the etch is good, 80% or more readable, see pictures. There is some staining and light pitting that affects its aesthetically only. The saw was hand filed cross cut with 15º of rake and 25º fleam. The 9 point pitch is a great all around one size fits all solution for the sawyer tight for spaced and works great all types of seasoned woods. The saw was tested on both maple and cheery and found to cuts smooth and straight. HANDLE: The American beech handle is near perfect and in very good shape. No repairs were needed. You will find some tool box dings but 90% or better of the finish remains. The nuts were cleaned but not polished. Henry Disston & Sons D-8 Thumb-hole Rip Saw 28 inch / 6 Points Per inch DISSTONS FINEST PITCH RIP SAW Filed Rip Cut 4º Rake 0º Fleam Taper Ground (measured at toe) .027 - .039 Circa 1896-1917 Time and popularity has show proven the D8 one of the best rip saw ever made and the original "skew-back" design. Patented by Henry Disston in 1874, it featured refined crucible steel, warranted craftsmanship, apple handle, and polished brass screws. All support its popularity with sawyers and novices alike. In addition to the highest quality materials the shape and position of the handle bolster it's rise to greatness. The new design allows for hand placement closer to work, improving guidance wile allowing a full stroke with more power applied. Proof of this can be seen in the popularity that remains today. Ask most sawyer and they agree it's hard to go wrong with a D-8 rip. There are exceptions to all the rules and one is if your left handed like myself you may find the ergonomics favor the right hand. That said I've used and sharpened well over 50 and found they cut great even for us south paws. Have a look at the pictures and let me know if you have any questions. The handle on the D8 changed a few times through the run. The earliest design being the most refined and ornate and became a bit more blocker over time this one falls right about the middle before they switched to the yellow/orange lacquer finish. ABOUT THE SAW: PLATE: The 6 points per inch tapered plate is straight and retains the factory crowned edge. The etch is light but 50% or better readable. You will find some staining and light pitting see pictures, the effects are aesthetically only. The saw was hand filed with 4º of rake and 0º fleam a classic cross-cut configuration a little less angle and but more aggressive then it's factory 8º. I find with properly aged woods found these days the steeper angle making short work of the task at hand. The saw was tested on two kind of wood, poplar and oak. I think you’ll agree it’s ready for service in your shop and will quickly become your go to saw for rip cuts. NOTE: the 6 ppi pitch was the finest of the rip saws available at the time. It's perfect for tricky woods or smaller sawyers. HANDLE: The apple wood handle is in very good condition. No repairs were made. You will find tool box nicks and character dings, but over all the handle and nuts are in very good condition. As stated above, this is the earlier-ish 1910-1917 design pre,yellow/orange lacquer years of the 30-50's. The handle was waxed, and the nuts cleaned but not buffed. thanks for looking and let me know if you have any questions. I've been having issues with the shipping being added to the sale. If you don't seen it at check out I will email you afterwards. I do not charge extra for shipping and most saws run between 10-18.00 in the US

The National Saw Company, Newark, N.J. USA Reprinted Catalogue from 1895 Reprinted by Mid-West Tool Collectors Association, 2006 Paperbound 192 pages 17 x 25 cm If you're interested in the less popular hand saw makers you know how hard it can be to find good information. In 2006 the M-WTCA reprinted one of the best sources for pictures and information on them. The National Saw Company marketed saws branded: Richardson Brothers Wheeler Madden & Clemson Manufacturing Company Harvey W. Peace Woodrough & McParlin All were once independent operations. Includes, one-man saws, two-man saws, circular saws, buck saws, hack saws, de-horning saws, butchers' saws, corn knives, cleavers, saw gummers, trowels, etc. They were consolidated by The National Saw Company who many believe was backed by DIsston to sell off inventory. After inventory ran out Disston added some of the patented designs like P26 with metal reinforced handle and No15 both made by Harvey Peace. The reprint is used but in very good shape. I took a few random pictures including the woodrough & McParlin panther head saw. The reprint was done in 2006 and no longer being sold. Henry Disston & Sons *New* 16 Hand Saw Extra Refined: Think back / London Spring Steel " Let In" Handle / Straight Back Wheat Carved Apple Handle 26 inch full plate/ 10 Points Per inch Factory tapered THIN plate .025-.035 (measured at toe) Circa 1896-1917 The *New* 16 is one of the anomalies in the Disston line. It shares features from a few models as well at it's own style. It's the only saw to use "New" rather then No. It advertises a thin back in the etch although most are consistent with other high end saws like the No. 12. The medallion location also differes from other saws and located in the bottom spot. Most would agree with the Extra Refine London Spring Steel and wheat Carved Apple handle the 16 sits near the top and just below the 12. In terms of production numbers however the 16 is much lower and this one falls right around the 1900's. Have a look at the pictures and let me know if you have any questions. This is one of the nicest examples I've had the pleasure of owning. The plate has some very light stains but in remarkably untouched condition. The saw screws looked to have been tightened but the handle hasn't been removed nor the plat sanded. Note the etch is factory fresh. The only real apologies are the nicks and scratches to the finish on the handle. The saw was NOT filed but if the new owner would like it done I will add it at no charge. SHIPPING WILL BE ADDED AFTER THE SALE OR CONTACT ME IN ADVANCE FOR QUOTE. ABOUT THE SAW: Plate: The 10 points per inch plate is perfectly straight, and retains 95% of it's factory shine. The etch is perfect and reads100%. Over all the plate does have some light scratches that affects it aesthetically only, see pictures. The plate was not sanded just a quick polish and wax to protect it. The saw was not filed as its such a nice example with full plate and factory teeth it doesn't seem right. I will however offer it for free to the new owner. Handle: The Apple wood handle is very good condition and needs no repairs. There is some light staining, and tool box dings but over all it's a real beauty: see pictures. Due to the condition only a light waxing. ABOUT ME AND THE PROCESS There are many of us offering recondition, collectable, and user-grade saws on eBay. I also sell direct and in person. I feel that’s worth noting as I’m not just a nameless, faceless eBay person. I attend many of the auctions and club meetings throughout the US. You’re welcome to check my background, follow my blog, or just email me. You can trust that my auctions are 100% honest and actively monitored to ensure that you will never be bidding against anyone who doesn’t have a genuine interest in the item.

Disston & Sons No. 12 made expressly for: HAMMACHER SCHLEMMER & Co 209 BOWERY, NEW YORK Extra Refined London Spring Steel Wheat Carved Apple Handle 26 inch near full plate 6 Points Per inch Factory tapered THIN plate .022-.035 (measured at toe) Filed rip cut 4º Rake 5º Fleam Circa 1900-1920 Hammacher Schlemmer opened for business in New York City, in 1848 a decade before the Civil War began. The building was at 209 Bowery St. in the heart of what today would be the east village. They offered a wide verity of mechanic's tools and builder's hardware. In the early 19th century high-quality hardware was not easy to come by and Hammacher Schlemmer quickly gained a reputation for offering some of the best tools sold anywhere in the city. The family run business smartly sourced the leading tool manufactures to make there products and share their name. The No. 12 is considered by many Disston's top of the line, featuring a chip carved apple handle and their best grade steel: London Extra Refined Spring steel. This example falls after the use of the Glover patent, and I'd say 1900-1915 would be about right for for time of production. it's right in the sweet spot of the golden years a really great saw for shop use. It's made in the years where Disston was head an shoulders above most in producing the best steel and plates in the states. The Handle is in the middle years where the top horn is slightly thicker then the early 1860's years but not so blocky as the later D12. Have a look at the pictures and let me know if you have any questions. The 11 point per inch is a great pitch for hand woodworkers looking for a finer cut. Mind you a hand plane will still be needed to clean up but over a 7 or 8 ppi it's a really clean finish. I also offer FREE second sharpening on all saws I sell sharpened. If you already own one don’t worry. The change is retroactive and all you’re responsible for is shipping. This is in addition to the FREE insurance I already offer. This and all my saws are guaranteed to be expertly hand-sharpened and tested to perform perfectly. If you find otherwise I will refund your money and all shipping charges. ABOUT THE SAW: Plate: Is straight, clean and retains much of it's factory shine. Note: Most early No 12's had an X on the plate under the handle. The X signified extra spring steel see pictures. The saw was made for Hammacher Schlemmer in NYC and does have double etches but both are light and 45% or better readable. Over all the plate does have some staining (see pictures) that affects it aesthetically only. The saw was hand filed cross rip with 4º of rake and 5º fleam. The finished saw was then tested on cherry and poplar, cuts were found to be straight and true. The 6 point pitch with slight fleam is a great choice for sawyers working with thinner stock, finer cuts, or tricky grain is used. Handle: The Apple wood handle is very good condition and needed the top horn repaired. The repair was done with seasoned apple wood and I will happily stand behind it. There is also some light staining, and tool box dings: see pictures. The horn was matched back to the handle and light finish of shellac and wax was used. The nuts cleaned but not buffed. SHIPPING WILL BE ADDED AFTER THE SALE. PLEASE EMAIL WITH ADDRESS AND I CAN SEND QUOTE IF NEEDED. I DO NOT CHARGE EXTRA OR HANDLING. thanks and please email with any questions Joe

H. Disston & Sons JACKSON LINE American OPEN beech handle 1095 Blue Tempered Spring Steel / Rockwell hardness C 48-51 .016 X 1-3/4 X 8" - 16 points per inch open handle dovetail Filed RIP 2º rake 0º fleam Circa 1860-1880 Jackson was the name given to the Disston made line of saws catering to the sawyer who fancied a more "English design". The line featured open handles like this one and beech handles that the standard line omitted. Often called a secondary line I find the quality of materials and craftsmanship to be on par with Disston’s regular line. Also note the American beech wood has handled the test of time better then most apple handles. A nice detail when looking for tools to be used rather then hung. This is one of the early model from the mid 1800. Pre-Glover Patent screws. My RESTO-SAWS combine a traditional vintage saw with a NEW 1095 Blue tempered spring steel plate. I find this combination offers the best of all words. New steel sharpens and holds its edge better and using a vintage handle provides the advantage and craftsmanship not found in the last 100 years. Since I’m using the factory back and handle the hang angle is not adjusted. This angle like rake and fleam is both technical and personal. This saw uses a very thin plated, .016 thick with minimal set and 2º of rake. This combination was chosen for dovetails and excels where a thin kurf is needed. Please note all sharpened saws I sell come with a FREE second sharpening. If you already own one don’t worry. The change is retroactive and you’re only responsible for is shipping. This is in addition to the FREE insurance I already offer. All my saws offer UNPARALLELED PRECISION, INTEGRITY & PERFORMANCE. If you find otherwise I will refund your money and all shipping charges. ABOUT THE SAW HANDLE: The early beech handle has some tool box nicks and stains but otherwise in very good shape. Both horns are full and no repairs were needed. As stated above Beech wood although not used on most American saws has proven it's self to be much hardier and more resilient in shop conditions. PLATE: The new .016 tempered spring steel plate was hand sanded and polished, buffed, and waxed. It was then toothed shaped, set and sharpened. The back however is original and after 100 years you will find some stains and pitting that affect it aesthetically only. The back was originally blued from the factory for rust resistance and I’ve cleaned and done this as well. The plate was filed rip cut with 2º rake 0º fleam and along with the thin plate makes a great dovetail saw. PLEASE NOTE SHIPPING WILL BE ADDED AFTERWARDS. Stanley No 42X Saw Set RECONDITIONED with new SPRINGS! and Org. Box - $100.00

Stanley No. 42X Saw Set & tool Gauge NOT JUST RESTORED BUT RECONDITIONED with NEW SPRINGS ****second run of springs that are 10% stiffer then early style*** Replacement springs: specifically made for 42x in the USA For many of us the Stanley No. 42X represents the best overall set made and to this day remains as such. No others set compare in ease of use and the durability Stanly built into the 42X. However despite the durability the 2 springs are wear items and over time weaken resulting in inconsistent setting of teeth. In addition some current manufactures like Lie-Nielsen still recommend them for their saws. Keep in mind MOST No. 42X Saw Sets are sold through the vintage market, the seller has never used, or tested it regardless of the selling price. The sets I’m offering are different. I’ve disassembled, inspected, clean, and oil where necessary as well as replaced the springs. Note the part inspected. Although uncommon the hammer or tip of metal used to push the teeth can break or chip. When this happens the set will not work properly, regardless of how pretty it looks or if the box is included. I offer these as vintage reconditioned, that work to the factory specs. Some are in better (looking) shape then others and pictures and descriptions will note. Keep in mind paint is an indicator of use but not the final work on how well something works. ABOUT THE SET FOR SALE The 42X saw set for sale has been disassembled, cleaned, and had the springs replaced and greases. The hammer was check for cracks and chips, and found to have NONE. The set was tested on a 26 "5.5 ppi rip saw and works to factory specification. This one falls in step with the last 2 and above what I'd call user condition and really clean considering the age. I've had a few people ask for boxes sets and was lucky enough to find this one. Keep in mind it's not NEW but rather in very good shape with 95% or more of the japping remaining. In addition to the set: The box, original paper instructions, and circular saw attachment. Please email with any questions. The sale includes. One reconditioned Stanley 42X Saw Set (complete with box, org. papers & circular saw attachment) One set of extra springs (2 springs) (springs now included are from my 2nd run and 10% stiffer) Printed instructions on how to replace the springs (updated with more pictures 4/8/13) Copy of original instructions from Stanley Some history on Murphy & Read Spring Manufacturing Co Over the last year I’ve hunted through tons of local hardware stores looking for a replacement before contacting a local US spring manufacture (Murphy & Read Spring Manufacturing Co) to making replacement springs based on testing of known good No. 42X’s I have. Alexander Murphy and John Read established Murphy & Read Spring Manufacturing Co. in 1917 in Philadelphia, PA. Read had been trained as a locksmith in England but was unable to find work in his native country. He immigrated to America as an indentured servant to a butcher. He later met Murphy, also a locksmith, and they started a small service company specializing in locks, keys and springs. In talking with them it’s quite possible with their location to Disston they may have produced springs for them and Stanley when the 42X was in production. PLEASE NOTE SHIPPING WILL BE ADDED AFTER THE SALE. IF NEED BE PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH ZIP FOR QUOTE. I DO NOT CHARGE EXTRA AND NORMALLY USE USPS. thanks Joe

Henry Disston & Sons Classic Golden year D8 Hand Saw "Let-In" "Cover-Top" Apple Handle Big BOY 28 inch 5.5 Points Per inch Progressive Pitch Original Thumb Hole Skew-back design Filed Rip 4º Rake 2º Fleam Hand taper Ground plate — measured at toe .020-.038 As I worked on this saw a popular saying from my younger days kept popping into my head. The racing was short lived but the saying always made me smile. . . “If you wanta run with the big boys you gota lift your leg a little higher. Enter the 28” Disston D-8, 5 points per inch rip saw. The pit bull of the Disston lineup The D8 is the original skew-back design patented by Henry Disston in 1874. It’s features: refined crucible steel, hand tapered ground plate, "let in" apple handle, and polished brass screws. This along with the Disston name made it one of the most popular saw in the world. The D8 was a total departure from the No 7 and anything currently on the market. The shape of the plate seems obvious but the let in design place the hand closer to the work giving the user better command of the saw and allowing a full stroke produces more power. This one falls early in the 1900 after the after the Glover patent. The over all condition is above average and the 28” plates are few and far between. With larger rip saws I find a little fleam help get them going and improves tracking in use. A little goes a long way and for those of you who haven't tried I think you'll be ple I’m now offering a FREE second sharpening on all saws I recondition. ABOUT THE SAW: THE PLATE: The smooth plate is straight and retains much of its original shine. The etch light and 30% or more readable, sorry the pictures isn't great as the days get shorter I'm loosing light. There is some staining and light pitting that affects it aesthetically only. The saw was hand filed with 4º of rake and 2º fleam. This configuration works great for cutting most seasoned woods. The saw was tested on both maple and cheery and found to cuts smooth and straight. THE HANDLE: is in good shape with full horns and no repairs need. This is the second generation of the handle and a nice blend of refined horns and higher detail around the thumb hole as compared to the latter years. With the years and use expect to find some tool box, stains and character dings but over all the wood has nice seasoned apple hue. The brass nuts were cleaned but not polished. SHIPPING WILL BE ADDED AFTER THE SALE. PLEASE EMAIL WITH ZIP FOR QUOTE IF NEEDED. thanks and please email with any questions. Joe

SIMONDS BAY STATE 14" No 98 HAND SHARPENED XTR FINE Sash SAW 12 ppi RIPPER - $100.00

SIMONDS Bay State Brand No. 98 "Special Crucible Steel, Patented temper process" Beech handled sash backsaw .025 x 2-7/8 X 14" 12 points per inch Filed Rip cut 4º rake 0º fleam Circa 1915-19 As time flows and I get my hands on more and more saws you worry less about the brand hype and more about the materials and construction. Simonds compared to many of the other saw manufactures didn't last as long but did make some fine saws in the years the doors were open. They didn't offer a true secondary line but did make some custom etched saws with the "Bay State" name. It's been rumored Bay State might have been an independent shop at one time however I've not found any facts to back that claim. The No 98 is found in a few of the Simonds Saws and Knives Catalogs Just after the Simonds 97 and middle of the line as they did make a 99 as well and featured a beech handle, polished edged, and blued back. This one being vintage stock has a few apologies but over all quite clean and retains most of the factory etch. Something rare as hens teeth! Also for others interested in Simonds I do offer the reprint of the 1919 catalog in my store. When considering the price please factor in all saws sold come with a FREE second sharpening. If you already own one don’t worry. The change is retroactive and all you’re responsible for is shipping. This is in addition to the FREE insurance I already offer. ABOUT THE SAW PLATE: The factory plate is straight and retains 80% or better of the etch along with some of the factory blue. As noted above just finding an etch is rare so it's impressive to find one is complete. As common with age you'll see some staining and few light pits but over all has a nice patina see pictures. The 14" sash sized backsaw is 12 points per inch and filed rip with 4º rake and 0º fleam. The saw was tested on poplar and butternut and found to produced perfect cuts. The 12 point pitch is a great saw for larger tenons or rip cuts and you'll find it make short work of trick woods with minimal tearout. HANDLE: The beech handle has seen use with a few tool-box nicks and character dings but over-all it's in very nice shape. The horns are full and no repairs were needed. The nuts were cleaned but not buffed. SHIPPING WILL BE ADDED AFTER THE SALE. PLEASE EMAIL WITH ANY QUESTIONS. I DO NOT CHARGE EXTRA FOR SHIPPING AND USE USPS UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED OR NEEDED. Thanks Joe

Wheeler Madden & Clemon Monhagen Saw Works—Middletown NY No. 2 Carcass Saw Blued-Back / English Beech .023 X 2-1/8 X 12" Circa 1860's This saw is a little of a departure from others I’ve been offering it’s been cleaned up but not sharpened. The plate has a little wobble to it that could possibly be smithed out however when I consider the over all condition I decided it’s more inspiration then user. For those of us enjoy the story behind these old saws and makers we all tend to gravitate to makes we like. For many its Disston and others enjoy Harvey Peace. However for many myself included Wheeler, Madden, Clemson and (sometimes) Bakewell who comprised Monhagen Saw Works, Middletown, N. Y would be top on my list. This saw falls right after Bakewell left the fold due to poor health and I’d put the date 1860’s. When viewing the medallions note the dotes around the outer edge; they call back to earlier Bakewell designs. Also note the lack of any pat date. The No 2 is a legendary backsaw when look at historical designs and from there their higher end, spring steel lineup. Offered for many years and continued after the sale the National Saw Co. Having a closer look at the pictures note the design of the handle. Unlike so many of the US makes it stands out and the flying wing horns a precursor, of sorts to the whale tail art deco era. Have a look at Mark's handles at Bad Axe tool works and you can easily see the simulates. As stated above this saw is not sharpened and being offered for inspiration on the wall, at the office or in you’re shop. SHIPPING WILL BE ADDED AFTER THE SALE. IF NEEDED EMAIL ME YOU ZIP FOR QUOTE. I DO NOT CHARGE EXTRA FOR SHIPPING. thanks Joe

EARLY 18" Simonds No.7 handsaw HAND SHARPEND 11 ppi Xcut 1890's - $160.00

Simonds "the saw maker" No. 7 Near Full Plate / with nib "Special Crucible Steel, Patented temper process" Taper Ground plate / apple handle Gent Sized: 18 inch 11 points per inch Filed Cross Cut: 15º rake 25º fleam taper at the toe .018-.028 I’ll skip the normal background on The Simonds Co. and just get to the meat of it. The exact date Simonds started making and selling saws is a little fuzzy and depending on the sourced it’s as early as the 1890’s and as late as 1910. But regardless of the camp you’re in the model and the medallion used isn’t. The model was the No 7, surprise, surprise and the medallion was a crescent moon and star. The exact reasoning behind the use of the crescent and star is most likely lost in history but I’ll offer one possibility. The moon often represents the god Sin lord of wisdom and the star Ishtar the goddess of love, war, and fertility. A combination any country or manufacture would be proud to have but for Simonds it was short lived and would be replaced after only a short time. In the early years the company did change has a bit and I’m sure that plays a part in the story. This dissertation is all to point out the saw I’m offering is from the first generation of saw they made. Have a look at the condition and you’ll also note the condition is above average. The gent sized 18 in plate has a wonderful patina and fine 11 points per inch pitch perfect for fine cuts and shop use. SHIPPING WILL BE ADDED AFTER THE SALE. PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH YOUR ZIP FOR QUOTE IF NEEDED. thanks so much and please email me with any questions. joe
